Kane Mendenhall was a typically active five year old until this summer when he was diagnosed with Leg Calf Pertes disease. The disease causes a loss of blood flow to the joint in his hips and has required him to wear leg braces nearly all day for at least a year. Kane is only free of his braces for three hours a day, and the freedom he enjoys at those times would be obvious to anyone. Kane's classmates have been accepting of his condition, which could keep him in braces for at least a year and take as much as a decade to disappear. His mother Kami said he is handling it like a "little trooper." In addition to Kane's medical problems his two younger siblings have health problems of their own.
