Now a senior at Hermann High School, Michael LaBoube feels "different." If
you see him in the halls, you'll often find him surrounded by friends and
acquaintances. But the connections sometimes seem tenuous, and there is a
sense that danger -- cruel words, cold stares or physical confrontation --
is just around the corner, behind the next locker, in the next class.
At 17, he's both an emerging adult and still, in many ways, a child. This
conflict plays itself out every day as he struggles to balance his desire to
be accepted, loved and happy with his desire to be himself.
