It was after a six-week stint at the Louisville Kentucky’s Children’s Hospital that Bill Luster’s photographic life took seed. He was 12, and his first camera came as a gift from his parents after Luster completed a growth hormone study. A graduate of Western Kentucky University, he went on to inaugurate the Glasgow Daily Times photo department, by being their first ever photographer. His latest photographic incarnation has spanned 33 years at the Louisville Courier-Journal, where he was Director of Photography from 1997-2001, and is currently the Associate Photo Editor. He has twice been recipient of the team Pulitzer Prize Awards. The 1976 award, which also included photographs by Melissa Farlow, was for coverage of court ordered busing, while the Courier-Journal’s1988 award was for a piece on the nation’s worst drunken driving accident. Luster’s photographs have appeared in Life, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, and the New York Times Magazine. Although, Luster has never technically worked as a jockey he has covered 38 Kentucky Derbies. | Faculty Margaret O'ConnorDennis Dimick Melissa Farlow MaryAnne Golon Kim Komenich Bill Luster Geri Migielicz George Olson Randy Olson Lois Raimondo Staff Angel AndersonRandy Cox Jim Curley Seth Jayson David Rees Jeff Thompson Greg Tomlinson Becca Young Crew David Barreda |
