When Dennis Dimick was 12 he was already documenting the world around him. His project was his 4-H potato project and the resulting panoramic pictures were exhibited at the county fair. True to the tradition of documentary photography that he began as a boy Dimick was recently named National Geographic Magazine’s Senior Editor for the environment where he oversees the magazine’s coverage in that area. He has been an editor at National Geographic Magazine since 1990. Dimick has also photo-edited several National Geographic Society books, including a book on the Endangered Species Act called “The Company We Keep" in 1996. Dimick has won several Pictures of the Year Awards including First Place Magazine Picture Editing Portfolio in 1995, 1996, and Third Place Magazine Picture Editing Portfolio in 2003. His journalism career started in the mid 1970s, and he wended his way from newspapers in Corvallis, McMinnville, and Pendleton, OR, Walla Walla, WA, and in Louisville, KY working as a photographer, reporter and then photo editor. He has been an editor at the National Geographic Society for the past 22 years.
