Everything comes out in the wash at Hackney’s, where friends gather and chatter as they wait for their laundry. John Hackney Jr. and his wife Jean met and fell in love at the Laundromat, which was built in 1970 by John Hackney Sr. and has been in the family ever since. Open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the shop is run in shifts by John Hackney Jr., his wife Jean, and their daughter Jamie, the third generation. Jamie, 26, began working with her family in January of 2012. Although she went to beauty school after high school and worked as a hair stylist for four years, she could not make ends meet at the salon. In hard economic times, the Hackneys have pulled together to keep the family business and themselves afloat. The family keeps things spinning as a host of characters cycle through the doors all day.
