On State Road AA, neighbors gather around a new mailbox, each offering their own opinion on the best way to affix it to its post. The owner, Harvey Hartung, accidentally knocked over the old one with a tractor the day before. The 83-year-old farmer has been working here for the better part of eight decades. He remembers tending to his father's horses. Today, diesel tractors do that work. "We worked hard every day of our lives," he said while standing on his well-manicured lawn. Behind him is a one-story brick house; he moved in 61 years ago after marrying his wife, Martha. Despite breaking his leg last year he still gets around.
He says he doesn't care about making money; he just wants to earn enough to continue farming. He remembers his brother, Junior. A few years ago he had a stroke, and then diabetes took both of his legs. He lives in a nursing home now, unable to work on his own. "It's worse than death," he says as he quietly mourns for a time that has passed.
