Like Smithson, Tim Fitzsimmons farms the same fields his father did. Except for a brief interlude, his home has been in the family for over a century. Fitzsimmons' combine cost the same as a suburban American house and is outfitted with yield and moisture monitors, a radio, climate control and a GPS tracking system that can cut crops precisely and automatically steer itself across the field. Fitzsimmons plants genetically engineered corn that he sells to the ten-year-old ethanol plant a few miles down the road. The plant represents not only industry, but also the future hopes for agriculture in general, a fact not even the President could ignore.
