Ask anyone around Macon and they will tell you, farming this land is inherited. When you combine the price of land with the initial investment cost of equipment, seed, fertilizer and livestock, jumping into the business on the ground floor seems impossible. Few even try. Almost every farmer has bought, rented, inherited or otherwise procured some land and equipment from their family. But these farmers do not work as their fathers once did. They grow different crops now, mostly soybeans and corn. The Chicago Board of Trade sets the price of these crops; the harvest is judged based on yield rates and efficiency.
