- It is evening in Chillicothe, Missouri and in a small one bedroom apartment a young mother and her three small children gather in the living room.
"I want to hold you!" 3-year-old Madison looks up at her mother Beth Leatherman. "Oh I want to hold you," Beth says back to her daughter and picks her up. "I've had kind of a rough life" says the young 25-year-old mother of three, 19-month-old Stephen, 3-year-old Madison and 5-year-old Bryce.
Beth most recently left a year long relationship to an abusive man and things have become better since. She takes care of the kids to the best of her ability while working full time at the Sonic drive-in restaurant and with additional help from WIC vouchers (Women, Infants and Children; a program that provides assistance to low income mothers) and food stamps. The family of four reside in a one bedroom apartment they recently moved into. It suffices for now and Beth hopes for a Habitat For Humanity House in the future. She thinks about the possibility of college but is very much rooted in the day to day needs of her children which she provides with much care, love and patience.
