Wayne Howe sits up in the bed where he spends most of his days, wearing a fitted oxygen mask to help him breathe. The cluttered walls are decorated with mementos from his family and reminders of his faith. Diabetes and heart conditions have killed seven of Wayne’s 11 siblings, and health specialists have told the Howes his condition is likely to worsen rather than improve.
