Story Summary

The McGinnis family has been making bourbon barrels for half a century, preceding the industry boom that lifted Cuba, Missouri in the 1980’s. Their factory, located on Old Route 66 on the east side of town, is the heart of the business. There, workers still assemble the barrels by hand, the way they’ve been made for centuries, save a touch of mechanization. The production team, their craft and their environment: all throwbacks to an artisanal, industrial age that many might assume had vanished from the U.S. long ago.
