John Lee has been a staff photographer for the Chicago Tribune since 1996. He is a graduate of San Jose State University's photojournalism program, and has interned at various newspapers, such as The Seattle Times and the
Minneapolis Star Tribune. Lee has received numerous awards, including several in previous Pictures of the Year contests. Lee is a two-time
Illinois Press Photographer's Association Photographer of the Year, and won several collegiate honors including the grand photography award at the Hearst competitions. Lee has traveled extensively through China for the Chicago Tribune, and is working on a long-term project on the development of China. He was stationed in Pakistan for the Tribune for several months in the fall of 2001, covering the conflicts in that country as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks. Lee was also part of the reporting team at the Tribune which won the Pulitzer Prize in explanatory journalism for their analysis of
the failing American air travel system.
